The writer was born on 24 August 1978, in Saint Thomas, the U.S. Virgin Islands. At the age of 10, she moved to Florida along with her mother. In one of her book, she has written that she has a troublesome childhood. She grew up in poverty and suffered both emotional and physical abuse. Her mother was an alcoholic and father indifferent. But the sad part was that, at the age of 13, she was raped.
At the age of 16, she ran away from the home and lived on a street for a month. To support herself economically, she started to work as an exotic dancer. Before moving to Los Angeles in 1999, she briefly lived in New York and Arizona.

Later she has revealed that she ended her relationship with Wilson to protect her son after landed in the hospital due to physical abuse.
However, she had been in many relationships as written in her book. Then in January 2016, she married actor and dancer Columbus Short. However, their relationships didn’t last long and ended with accusing Short of being a bigamist.
